York Region Educational Services attended Ventura Park Public School’s Fun Fair with team members Fei Fei, Ana, and Megan. Together, the team hosted an engaging booth where children explored LEGO robotics, art, science, and creative building activities while families learned more about YRES programs and summer camp opportunities.
Fei Fei shared that one of the most meaningful highlights was meeting a LEGO donor who contributed a large box of LEGO for YRES to use. It was also special to speak with him about YRES programs while seeing his daughter participate in the LEGO robotics and art activities. Another highlight was watching volunteers actively reach out to parents, hand out flyers, and share information about YRES programs. Even when one of the robot’s motors stopped working right before the event began, the team adapted quickly by rebuilding the LEGO robot and ensuring the activity could continue. Reflecting on the event, Fei Fei described it as “a rewarding opportunity to connect with families in the community”.
Ana also highlighted the children’s creativity and curiosity throughout the day. She enjoyed hearing stories about their favourite animals, school experiences, and the projects they were building. Parents were also attentive and interested in learning about YRES opportunities, even when their children already had summer plans arranged. Ana described LEGO Fun Fairs as “a great way to connect with the community through fun and engaging activities involving arts, science, and robotics”.
For Megan, the event was especially memorable because it was her first Fun Fair. She shared that “the enthusiasm and excitement that the kids showed when doing activities made the event very enjoyable”. Although she was initially nervous about feeling confused during the event, she found her team to be supportive and helpful, making the experience positive and rewarding.
Overall, the LEGO Fun Fair was a wonderful opportunity for YRES to connect with families, promote hands-on STEAM learning, and showcase the creativity, teamwork, and adaptability behind its programs. Through engaging activities and strong volunteer support, the team helped create a fun and educational experience for children and parents alike.
