York Region Educational Services attended Franklin Street Public School’s Fun Fair with team members Aanushan, Allysha, Jenny, and Daphne. Together, they hosted engaging LEGO activities, introduced families to YRES summer camps, and connected with potential community partners.
Aanushan, the event lead, successfully connected with two organizations interested in collaborating with YRES and also met former volunteers. A particularly rewarding moment was watching a volunteer independently lead the LEGO Robotics station and teach children how to use the code. Aanushan noted that “it is clear that he paid attention to his training,” highlighting the value of preparation and hands-on experience.
Allysha enjoyed seeing children participate in the activities while parents learned more about YRES summer camps. Although attendance was not overwhelming, there was a steady flow of families that created a lively and engaging atmosphere. Because the team had not known the event would be outdoors, they did not have a tent, making the sunny conditions challenging. The team responded by taking regular breaks and staying hydrated. Allysha described the Fun Fair as “a fun and meaningful experience” and appreciated contributing to a positive community event.
Jenny helped children spin the prize wheel and spoke with parents about YRES summer camps. She described the event as “a new and refreshing experience” that allowed her to connect with people from different communities and engage them in YRES’s mission.
Daphne, the marketing lead, enjoyed seeing students’ interest in the LEGO activities and hearing that many parents were already connected to YRES camps. The prizes were especially popular and helped make the booth more engaging and memorable. She described the event as “a fun and meaningful experience,” with the children’s excitement making the day even more enjoyable.
Overall, the Fun Fair gave YRES a valuable opportunity to promote its educational programs, build new community connections, and provide children with interactive LEGO experiences. Through teamwork, adaptability, and strong outreach, the team created a welcoming experience for families despite the challenges of the outdoor setting.
