YRES Builds Community Connections Through LEGO Learning at Harry Bowes PS

York Region Educational Services attended the Harry Bowes PS Fun Fair with team members Dorothy, Gabrielle, Krisanne, Celia, and Matthew. Together, they hosted engaging LEGO Robotics, LEGO Art, and LEGO Science activities while speaking with families about YRES programs, summer camps, and RoboNova.

Dorothy, the team lead, highlighted the wide age range of children who participated in the robotics maze activity. She also noted that the event successfully solidified a strong partnership with the school administration, who were explicitly interested in welcoming YRES back next year and accepted YRES flyers. Dorothy appreciated the supportive team environment, the fun event atmosphere, and the opportunity to interact with interested families. She shared that similar activities should continue in the future, noting that the existing event guide “seems to be working well”.

Gabrielle enjoyed seeing children laugh, smile, and stay focused while trying to make the SPIKE code work. One memorable moment was joking with the children that they were “too smart for this lesson”, which made them laugh. She also enjoyed seeing their excitement when they got to spin the prize wheel. For Gabrielle, the event was valuable because it helped reach the right audience, including both parents and children who may be interested in YRES summer camps.

Krisanne highlighted several memorable moments, including taking a group photo in front of the large inflatable Fun Fair entrance and meeting some of her former students from the area. She also enjoyed encouraging children to complete activities and spin the prize wheel for prizes. Krisanne appreciated Matthew’s consistency in speaking with parents about YRES programs and noted that the event gave families “the opportunity to see and experience a little bit of all 3 of our Lego branches”.

Celia reflected on the fast-paced nature of the Fun Fair and the importance of managing activity timing during busy periods. She explained that it was important to reinforce time limits while also recognizing when children could spend more time at a station during quieter moments. Celia shared that Fun Fairs help create community impact and make the YRES brand more known, especially as many parents showed interest in summer camp and RoboNova.

Matthew, the marketing lead, highlighted the strong interest from parents in YRES camp programs, especially summer camp. He also noticed that children were drawn to the LEGO activities, particularly LEGO Art, where they built complex and creative designs. The prize wheel helped motivate attendees to complete the activities, and the booth stood out from the hallway because of its eye-catching LEGO setup. Matthew shared that the team was knowledgeable, the activities attracted attention, and YRES was able to spread awareness of its camp programs to many parents.

Overall, the Harry Bowes PS Fun Fair was a successful opportunity for YRES to connect with families, showcase its LEGO programs, and strengthen its presence in the community. Through strong teamwork, engaging activities, and meaningful conversations with parents, the team created a fun and informative experience for students and families.
