Since March 2025, York Region Educational Services (YRES) has partnered with Aaniin Community Centre to offer LEGO Robotics workshops every Saturday for students ranging from elementary to middle school. These hands-on sessions foster creativity and teamwork as students work together to build and program their own robots.
Each week, students are grouped in teams of four, with access to LEGO Education SPIKE kits and laptops. Under the guidance of lead instructor Brian Philip, Alisa, and B’Jounai, they construct robotic creations and control them through Scratch, a beginner-friendly programming platform. The workshops encourage problem-solving and customization, with students bringing their ideas to life.
The program is supported by high school volunteers from the YRES Volunteer Program, who take on leadership roles, helping guide the students and gain valuable teaching experience.
Alisa shares, “It’s incredible to see how quickly students pick up new concepts, and their excitement when they realize their robots work is truly rewarding. This program is not just about coding; it’s about fostering collaboration and creativity.”
B’Jounai adds, “Watching students work together and solve challenges as a team is amazing. It’s great to be part of a program that not only teaches new skills but also builds confidence and teamwork.”
Brian Philip, the Lead Instructor, adds:
“These workshops are a great way to nurture creativity and teamwork. It’s been fantastic working with the volunteers and students, and we’re excited to continue this partnership.”
