CarSon's reflection
Now that summer camp is coming to a close, explain 3 key takeaways from the experience? How will you apply it in the future?
My first takeaway is about planning and instructions. This year I had to plan a lot and give out instructions a lot. I learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t. For example, you need to plan more than what you planned for. You need to prepare and plan for mistakes to happen, prepare and plan for activities to take longer or to take not as long, and prepare and plan for your staff not liking some of the procedures. The second takeaway I got was good leadership. Not for me, but for my site leaders, good leadership can make or break a site. Sometimes it’s hard to differentiate between friends and co-workers, but the ones that can do that and make the hard decisions are good leaders. My third takeaway is physical and mental health. This for me personally is always hard and I’ve been on a continuous cycle of sickness. In the future, I need to take into consideration my own limits and put my health first.
Describe one of the biggest challenges you faced, how you overcame it, and what you learned from it.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was having a lot of incidents happen in one week. Mentally, it exhausted me and I honestly felt like giving up. There was a lot of backlash and hatred coming from the incidents. It affected my mental health a lot. I overcame that by telling myself I did all that I could do and that I should still be proud of what I accomplished.
To close off the term on a high note, what were 3 highlights from your time at YRES?
My first highlight would be when the campers knew my name. Not a lot of campers know me but it warms my heart when I see old and new campers come up to me and talk to me about anything. Or if I tell them I have to go and they want me to stay. Or if I walk into the gym and they’re whispering or yelling my name. My second highlight would be getting to see my counsellors all make friends with each other. Whether they bonded over talking bad about me or through their tough times at camp, it makes me feel proud of my counsellors when they make friends. I feel like a happy mother when I see my kids working together and having fun. My third highlight would be making my own friends. As corny as it sounds, I really enjoyed doing things outside of work with my coworkers whether that be the scariest horror escape room I’ve been to or eating plates of meat at hotpot.
What is some advice/tip that you would offer to future staff?
Have an open mind. I know working for a non profit is tough. There’s going to be things you don’t like but if you can push through that and see the beauty behind the work, you’ll have a good time.
Please nominate someone who deserves the employee of the month award and explain why briefly. You can nominate more than one person.
Catherine for her monthly blogs this term (even though she’s never rigged this question so I win). Rishia and Jamie for the speech contest, Anjali and Jodi for the camp grad, and Annabel and Tanya for the volunteer appreciation.
