Mayeli's Reflection

What were your initial expectations coming to work at YRES, and how have they evolved after your first month on the job?

My initial expectations coming to work at YRES were to work collaboratively with a team to produce a high quality summer camp. My expectations also included various training sessions to support my growth in becoming a camp counsellor. My expectations have evolved after my first month with York Region Educational Services as I have learned everyone works very closely together and we can depend on each other to complete various projects. My expectations have also evolved in regards to the possibility of working on more than one project at a time and being successful, but it is okay to ask for help if there is too much on your plate or you are not understanding something.

What were your first interactions with the team and how have you been working to build relationships between you and your fellow team members?

My first interactions with most of my team were that they were also new to the job, so I feel that has been a stepping stone to bond together as we are all doing our best to support each other and learn the ropes to the various projects we have. I have been working to build relationships between me and my team members by trying to talk to them as much as I can whenever we are in person. I also communicate with various of my coworkers through slack in a friendly manner to open up more communication. Some of my coworkers I have gotten to know a bit more are Avneet as we work together on the summer camp scheduler and my teammates from Elite Weekend camp.

How do you envision your term at YRES contributing to your personal and professional growth?

I envision my term at YRES contributing to my personal and professional growth by having the opportunity to develop and strengthen more skills. Specifically, I have the opportunity to strengthen my communication skills as this job is very communicative based. I have also been able to develop my collaboration skills with my colleagues as this job also requires you to work very closely with your colleagues. This coop is helping me develop independence and self management skills which are important to my professional growth and my future career path of working with youth.

Who do you want to show some appreciation to the most and why?

I want to show appreciation to all of my colleagues the most because without their assistance when I need it, I don’t feel that I would be as successful.
