Elizabeth's Reflection

Keywords:

What were your initial expectations coming to work at YRES, and how have they evolved after your first month on the job?

I was expecting a more “rigid” approach where we were assigned tasks that we had to change ourselves to fit the task. However after my first month, I realized we are to do tasks that fit us, and to choose tasks that interest us. I was also expecting a more set job with clear cut expectations, but I was given the opportunity to work on a lot of different types of jobs such as weekend camps, or market research tasks. These opportunities allow me to gain a lot of experience in many different fields, building a more all rounded skill set.

What were your first interactions with the team and how have you been working to build relationships between you and your fellow team members?

It was very easy to get close with the team as everyone was really nice and we were allowed to freely collaborate with each. With collaboration being highly encouraged, I was able to build more connections with new teammates and hope to continue to do so throughout the term.

There are both online and in person portions of this job. Working from home has many benefits but having to go in person on certain days definitely helps with team building as the team gets to “hang out” with each other and ask for help and insight from each other more easily.

How do you envision your term at YRES contributing to your personal and professional growth?

Since tasks and goals are constantly changing, working at YRES this term will train my adaptability and critical thinking. Another important aspect of working at YRES is the constant communication to each other and through slack channels. When doing school work, most work is done independently and there is no need to report to anyone or share information. Working a job with a team requires constant communication, so I was able to form the habit of letting my colleagues and supervisors know what tasks are finished, and getting over the anxiety of sending the first message into a channel with all my other colleagues and supervisors.

Who do you want to show some appreciation to the most and why?

I would like to show appreciation to Tanya and Dorothy as they are always so fast to answer any questions I have with concise and helpful tips. No matter how confused I feel, I know that they are people I can rely on to clear up any uncertainties I have.
