Christina's November reflection

Overall, what aspects of the workplace culture stood out to you, and how did they impact your experience at U+/YRES?

The workplace culture at YRES stood out for several reasons, each of which positively impacted my experience. First, the hybrid working model was incredibly adaptive and understanding. Being able to manage my own hours and work virtually when needed gave me the flexibility to balance my responsibilities and produce quality results. Second, the team-oriented environment fostered a strong sense of community. I developed close bonds with my colleagues and created lasting memories! The support I received from my peers made the work enjoyable, while also contributing to my personal and professional growth as I take these experiences into my future endeavors. Lastly, YRES’ responsiveness to my personal goals was especially impactful. When I expressed an interest in leadership, I was entrusted with the responsibilities of managing Stonebridge PS, our largest summer camp location, as a site leader. I am thankful for the company’s confidence in my abilities, providing me with a unique opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and grow my skills.

How do you think your work has impacted your team and the organization as a whole? Is there any feedback you’ve received that guides your understanding of this?

I believe my work with the ‘Essentials of LEGO Robotics’ program has had a significant impact on both my team and the organization as a whole. By establishing a solid foundation for the program, I have set the team up for future success. This includes developing a comprehensive curriculum that can be implemented in upcoming months and during summer camp, as well as securing collaborations with schools and organizations that are eager to partner with us again. I have received positive feedback from schools, teachers, students, and parents that has strongly reinforced my understanding of the program’s success. High levels of interest and satisfaction have been highlighted through various surveys and verbal feedback. Moreover, my supervisor and colleagues have also commended the progress and execution of the initiative. Through personal experiences, I can affirm that the program has great potential to thrive due to the enthusiasm and engagement received from the community and its students.

If you could give a piece of advice to your past self at the start of the term, what would it be?

If I could give a piece of advice to my past self, it would be to accept help from other people. I have a tendency to take on numerous tasks and responsibilities, refusing assistance as I would have the mindset that I can handle it on my own. This mindset has often led to sleepless nights and long, draining days. However, my perspective shifted during summer camp, where I realized I simply didn’t have enough time or the capacity to manage everything that needed to be done. Eventually, I accepted that I couldn’t do it alone and shared my responsibilities with my co-site leader. By collaborating effectively together, we worked far more efficiently and effectively.

Please give a shoutout to someone who deserves employee of the month and briefly describe why.

I would like to give a shoutout to Jessica! She has been nothing but supportive when I was busy hosting the LEGO Robotics program at various schools. As she joined me at Stonebridge PS and Castlemore PS, she helped me deliver numerous successful workshops by engaging with the students and supporting my scheduled activities. Additionally, she took on the big responsibility of managing a team of WEA students and guiding them to help develop marketing materials for my program!
