Anjali's reflection

Now that summer camp is coming to a close, explain 3 key takeaways from the experience? How will you apply it in the future?

Three key takeaways from the camp experience are: First, I’ve learned the importance of managing multiple tasks simultaneously. It’s very important to apply logical thinking to assess situations, prioritize what’s most important, and navigate challenges efficiently. Second, being a leader means confidently delegating tasks. It’s crucial to be both firm and fair, creating an environment where others feel comfortable approaching you with concerns or ideas. This will improve morale in the workplace. Finally, I’ve realized that camp is an ever-changing, unpredictable environment. Adaptability is key, and being prepared for any scenario is a valuable skill that I will carry forward.

Describe one of the biggest challenges you faced, how you overcame it, and what you learned from it.

The biggest challenge I faced at camp was dealing with multiple incidents that occurred at once, each requiring immediate attention. One particularly stressful situation involved a volunteer who approached me, unsure if he was having an allergic reaction. At that moment, I had to quickly assess the situation and make the decision to call 911. I stayed with the volunteer, providing reassurance and helping to keep him calm, while also coordinating with paramedics and directing his father to the location.

At the same time, I needed to delegate responsibilities to other counselors to manage the ongoing incidents. I knew that staying calm and confident was important, not only for the volunteer’s sake but also to avoid alarming the other children with the sound of sirens and the presence of emergency responders. By maintaining composure and clear communication, I was able to navigate the situation effectively, ensuring everyone’s safety and minimizing panic.

To close off the term on a high note, what were 3 highlights from your time at YRES?

The first major highlight was forming strong friendships with my fellow employees and coworkers. I developed deep bonds and made lasting friendships that I value. Secondly, I gained leadership experience as a site leader. Being in charge and having the responsibility to lead felt incredibly rewarding, especially because I had such amazing counselors and volunteers working alongside me. Their support made the leadership experience even more fulfilling. Lastly, I had the opportunity to work closely with children, which I genuinely enjoy. I developed my skills in communicating with them, handling incidents, and creating a fun and engaging environment. Building connections with the kids and seeing them enjoy their time at camp was incredibly gratifying.

What is some advice/tip that you would offer to future staff?

One piece of advice I’d give to future staff is to never hesitate to put yourself out there. Embrace opportunities within the organization, and don’t be afraid to ask for different roles that can help you develop a range of skills. Confidence is key in everything you do here, so trust in your abilities. At the same time, don’t be scared to seek clarification or further instructions when needed—everyone here is incredibly understanding and supportive.

Please nominate someone who deserves the employee of the month award and explain why briefly. You can nominate more than one person.

AMINAH! She is a really great site leader at St. Anne’s and takes the opportunity to help others but also asks for help when she needs it. I admire her because she values all her staff and always encourages friendships!
