Mayuresan's Volunteer reflection
1. Which YRES event(s) did you volunteer at? Please provide a brief description of what you did as well.
I volunteered at YRES’s 2024 Summer Camp Program, from July to August 2024. I volunteered at their Markham-Thornhill location, Stonebridge Public School. I was placed in a “Junior” (Kindergarten-level) classroom, and was responsible for assisting my camp counsellors with educational STEM activities, carrying out lesson plans for the week to 4-5 year old campers, sign in and sign out, washroom breaks and handwashing, gym equipment checks, and more.
2. What was some knowledge that you gained or skills that you developed or strengthened through this volunteer opportunity?
I can confidently say that I was able to develop and refine many skills I had previously gained in school, including communication, leadership, punctuality, and team-working skills. By having to communicate to counsellors and site leaders about possible issues with campers, it was a excellent opportunity for me to also network and create crucial connections between employees and volunteers.
3. How did your volunteering experience positively impact your perspective on the community you worked with?
As I wish to pursue a career in education and teaching, I had to realize what it meant to work with young children and the challenges it brings. Patience, empathy, and non-verbal communication are some of the many skills I had to bring to camp every day and at the end of the day, I was able to create lasting memories with young campers while ensuring they were safe and supported.
4. What was one highlight and one take-away from volunteering at YRES that supports your growth and development?
One highlight of my experience volunteering at YRES was the debrief meetings held before and after each day. These sessions were invaluable in setting expectations for both volunteers and counselors, covering important information such as meal plans, daily activities, and key updates. They ensured that everyone was aligned and prepared, fostering a productive environment.
Additionally, after the summer camp, I had the opportunity to network with employees, which opened doors to further volunteer opportunities within YRES. This recognition of my contributions allowed me to explore and test-drive my career aspirations in a supportive setting.
5. What are your tips for future volunteers? Please explain the significance of the tips.
For future YRES volunteers, I highly recommend exploring the wide range of programs they offer and selecting one that truly aligns with your interests. Volunteering is not just about giving back; it’s also an opportunity to step outside the academic environment and engage meaningfully with others, especially younger participants. When you’re genuinely passionate about the work you’re doing, it not only enhances your experience but also creates lasting, positive memories for the children. Your enthusiasm can make a profound difference in their camp experience, while helping you grow both personally and professionally.
