Mayeli's reflection

Now that summer camp is coming to a close, explain 3 key takeaways from the experience? How will you apply it in the future?

Reflecting on the end of summer camp, three key takeaways from this experience are engaging in teamwork and collaboration, learning adaptability, and gaining a sense of self-discovery and independence. In terms of teamwork and collaboration, this summer camp emphasizes working together through various group activities. The camp has allowed me to build stronger communications skills, the ability to compromise, and leadership qualities in a classroom. Applying this to the future could mean approaching my final year in my degree program, work, or other group settings in a more collaborative mindset, being open to diverse perspectives, and taking the lead when necessary. In terms of adaptability, the camp involved a new environment with an unfamiliar routine, and unexpected challenges. Learning to adapt in the face of these changes was invaluable. In the future, having a skill such as adaptability can help with transitions in life in various ways. Lastly, in terms of self discovery and independence, this camp encourages personal growth and self-discovery. Having the ability to take charge in your own classroom fosters independence, allowing me to learn more about my strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Going forward in the future, this self-awareness can guide decisions about personal goals and career choices, ensuring a path that aligns with my authentic self.

Describe one of the biggest challenges you faced, how you overcame it, and what you learned from it.

One of the biggest challenges I faced throughout my time at camp as a camp counselor was having several students struggle to remain on task when engaging in academic activities. Despite previous reminders to stay focused, the academic periods would stall for a period of time while trying to get everyone back on task. It was important to remember authority had to be asserted effectively so no further tension was created but everyone could remain back on task. This challenge was overcome with a lot of patients, along with calmly stepping in with a slightly raised voice to command attention and ask for everyone’s focus. I would make it clear the behavior was not acceptable and explain why. After setting firm expectations I reminded the class we could move onto something they would like to do as soon as we were done with the academics. From these challenges, I learned the importance of establishing boundaries early on and maintaining the same expectations consistently. Asserting authority does not always mean being forceful, but instead being clear, firm, and fair.

To close off the term on a high note, what were 3 highlights from your time at YRES?

Throughout the six weeks at camp, there were various highlights I had experienced that will leave me with lasting memories. The first highlight was making new relationships with fellow counselors and the campers around the campsite. Being able to successfully collaborate with all to create an enjoyable summer camp was a great experience. Over the six weeks, most of the campers in my room had stayed with us, allowing us the time to build wonderful teacher-camper relationships that created lasting memories for myself. The second highlight was engaging in our camp-wide activities (specifically the carnival day). I think they were very successful and enjoyable to all. As a camp counselor, being able to take part in activities that brighten the campers faces was one of the best things to see along with hearing their laughs and giggles. The last highlight from my time at YRES was being able to take on various leadership roles. This truly gave me the opportunity to learn about more strengths and weaknesses I have and learn how to work around them to be as successful as possible.

What is some advice/tip that you would offer to future staff?

Advice that I would offer future staff is to not be intimidated when joining the company. It can be a little scary at the beginning as there are various projects you can work on, but ultimately, everyone wants to see you succeed and therefore they will be there to aid you in any way they can when you ask for the help. That is another tip, don’t be afraid to ask for help and always accept constructive feedback as it will set you up to be more successful the next time around.

Please nominate someone who deserves the employee of the month award and explain why briefly. You can nominate more than one person.

I think Dorothy deserves the employee of the month award. She works so hard every day and always puts in her best effort to meet everyone’s needs to the best of her ability.
