Elizabeth's reflection
Now that summer camp is coming to a close, explain 3 key takeaways from the experience? How will you apply it in the future?
One key takeaway from this experience at summer camp is the importance of patience. Whether it be patience with the campers, parents, volunteers, or other counsellors, patience has been the main asset to being successful day after day. A second key takeaway from this camp experience is how important collaboration and working closely with your co counsellors and volunteers are. In order to have a successful day I had to constantly communicate and come to agreements with my co counsellor, as well as keeping my classroom volunteers informed about any situations that have occurred and things that needed to be taken care of. A third takeaway is how rewarding the entire experience was. Although it was tiring at times and I was put into many situations that were difficult to handle, the genuine connection I made with the campers and volunteers was worth it.
Describe one of the biggest challenges you faced, how you overcame it, and what you learned from it.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was a particularly difficult camper that had many needs and challenges that could be difficult to handle. I overcame this problem by working together with the volunteers to slowly figure out a way to keep the camper occupied and happy so he and every other camper could enjoy their time at camp. My co counsellor and I had to continuously change up the approach we took when handling this camper. What I learned from this challenge was how important it was to be able to think on your feet and adapt to different situations that might come your way.
To close off the term on a high note, what were 3 highlights from your time at YRES?
My first highlight of the term was the first day at Stonebridge where all the university co-op students met. It was a highlight because it was a day where I made a lot of new friends that I would be spending a lot of time with for the next 4 months. My second highlight was a work outing I had with my fellow counsellors at MDHS. It was a very cool experience to have all started off as just coworkers to becoming friends. My third highlight was doing art periods with campers because they would often ask to do it with the counsellors and volunteers, so it was a good opportunity to do some activities that I may not have been able to do if I was not at camp.
What is some advice/tip that you would offer to future staff?
I would advise future staff to be firm with the rules set for their classroom and to not be lenient with them, as campers will take advantage of the leniency.
Please nominate someone who deserves the employee of the month award and explain why briefly. You can nominate more than one person.
Anjali! Anjali was an incredibly strong presence at MDHS and this camp would not have run nearly as smoothly without her.
