Megan's reflection

Now that camp has officially started, describe one challenge and how you overcame it during the transition to camp duties.

A significant challenge I faced during the transition to camp duties was balancing multiple roles. In addition to progressing from community communications to assistant site leader, I was also managing the ongoing preparation for the MPL x YRES Back to School Giveaway. Adapting to the constantly changing camp environment and handling unforeseen circumstances was more overwhelming than expected. Despite various responsibilities, my time management skills allowed me to allocate and prioritize tasks effectively, enabling me to support my teams. I utilized the sign-in/out period for communications work, dedicated the full day to supervising my campsite, and checked in with my giveaway team weekly regarding donation boxes and material organization.

Describe your top 3 camp moments thus far and why they stand out to you.

One of my favourite camp moments was the Lego Robotics sessions with Christina, as it was a fantastic opportunity for campers to engage with something more technical. Everyone had so much fun, it was nice to witness both the competitiveness and teamwork between campers and staff leaders in their groups. As the assistant site leader at MDHS, another wholesome moment is getting to know all the campers at our site. It gives me a positive boost whenever a camper arrives with a big smile and whenever they greet me with cool creations or artwork (one camper even drew a portrait of me!). Lastly, seeing the friendships blossom at camp is incredibly rewarding. Whether between campers or staff, it is beautiful to see everyone bonding with one another and that is what keeps me motivated at work!

Being a month into camp, how do you see the summer camp experience contributing to your personal and professional growth?

Being a month into summer camp, my leadership skills experienced significant growth. Although I had prior leadership experience, this role was more challenging due to the diverse group I was leading, including counsellors, volunteers, and campers. Maintaining team morale while enforcing rules was challenging, but I recognized the importance of mutual understanding and transparency within the team. Our campsite operated smoothly because we communicated openly when support was needed. Additionally, working under pressure was a crucial aspect of my growth. The ability to respond effectively to unpredictable situations involved coordinating with my team to address challenges collaboratively, which allowed us to manage problems more efficiently. This one month experience taught me the value of adaptive leadership and reinforced the necessity of clear communication and teamwork in achieving our goals.

Please nominate someone who deserves the employee of the month award and explain why briefly. You can nominate more than one person.

I would like to nominate Anjali/Nathaniel for the Employee of the Month award. When working closely with Anjali, I have witnessed her dedication and perseverance in leading our team. Additionally, she was a huge support when I first became the assistant site leader and was still adapting to the role. Nathaniel, on the other hand, has been an outstanding counsellor. His accountability is evident through his constant communication with Anjali and me, and he consistently brings innovative ideas for the seniors. I am immensely grateful to work with them, as their energy has significantly enhanced my camp experience!
