CarSon's reflection

Now that camp has officially started, describe one challenge and how you overcame it during the transition to camp duties.

One challenge I had was with the quantity of materials for the camp. It was hard to judge how many materials we needed for 500 campers and I ended up providing too little. Some of the materials were things campers used for free time and not just the planned activity so some of the materials ended up running out early. At the end of each week, I had a site leader meeting with all site leaders and asked them what materials they needed. Having an equipment checklist for each site also helped because they would know what materials were missing or that they needed for the next week. Site leaders and I still have to buy some materials that run out weekly, but it is currently working out.

Describe your top 3 camp moments thus far and why they stand out to you.

1 – This didn’t happen just once but multiple times. It’s when I see parents come up to me or the counsellors during sign out and they say that the camp has been very fun for their children and thank us for the hard work. It really shows the impact and work that the counsellors have been putting in.

2 – This was during the capture the flag camp wide activity at Stonebridge. It was 2 or 3 senior classes playing but I joined in for a bit and it was fun seeing the campers work together even though they might not know people from other classes.

3 – My last top camp moment would be seeing previous campers from camp last year or March Break Camp and saying hello and having them remember me!

Being a month into camp, how do you see the summer camp experience contributing to your personal and professional growth?

I think the camp experience has shown me what kind of leadership style I have and like. Since camp isn’t too professional of a workplace, my leadership has been more relaxed but strict when I need to be. I feel it’s always better to have a good relationship with your co-workers and it’s good to have a positive attitude even when you don’t feel so positive. I know that it is something I still need to work on, but my time at camp has definitely helped me improve that. Camp has also allowed me to expand my customer service skills and talking with parents, caretakers, and campers has given me a lot of knowledge on when to change the language depending on who I talk to.

Please nominate someone who deserves the employee of the month award and explain why briefly. You can nominate more than one person.

I would like to nominate all of the site leaders and counsellors. They’ve been working hard since Day 1 and camp wouldn’t be possible without them. You can add a vote for all of them.
