On April 23, 2024, YRES joined Volunteer Connect, formerly known as Volunteer Markham, in presenting our respective organizations and opportunities to a class of newcomer students at Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academic High School. I was given the opportunity to represent YRES and it was a great experience.
It was a quick after-school event coordinated by Logini Vinay from Catholic Community Services of York Region (CCSYR), who wanted to connect her students with different community organizations in regards to volunteering opportunities and educational resources. Corrina Santos of Volunteer Connect started off the presentation by showcasing her organization, the significance of volunteerism, and some of their current volunteer opportunity listings. She then passed on the rest of the time to me, in which I laid out YRES’s free monthly virtual classes, hybrid youth workshops, and volunteering opportunities. After our presentations, Santos and I were approached by a few students that wanted to take some of our flyers. I was also able to converse further with a student that wanted to gain experience working with children and wanted to learn more about our STEAM and sports summer camp volunteering opportunities!
Having worked with Volunteer Connect and Santos across events over the past few years, it was great for YRES to once again partner with them. It was also encouraging to see students interested in further learning outside of school and in volunteering to serve the community and to gain skills and experience for their long-term goals. I look forward to more opportunities to work with Volunteer Connect again and other opportunities to conduct community outreach!
