Annabel's reflection

Now that camp has officially started, describe one challenge and how you overcame it during the transition to camp duties.

One challenge of camp is just adjusting to the amount of kids there are and adjusting the curriculum to fit them. During our first 2 weeks we were still adjusting to campers, volunteers and the overall system. One of our challenges was that the campers only wanted to play card games and nothing else. We overcame this by thinking of new activities beyond the camp manual that the campers would like. Eventually most of the campers chose to do activities and games over uno/cards

Describe your top 3 camp moments thus far and why they stand out to you.

My top 3 camp moments all relate to my experience with campers. My favorite moments were the games and activities we had. I really liked the tie dye day as everyone was so creative with their shirts and it came out really great. One camper even brought all the fans to the front of the class so the shirts can dry faster 🙂 Another top moment for me is whenever we play gym games as it’s fun seeing all the campers engage together. Finally, another top moment for me was receiving a paper ring from a camper 🙂

Being a month into camp, how do you see the summer camp experience contributing to your personal and professional growth?

Summer camp has contributed to my personal and professional growth as it helped me feel more assured and confident in the decisions and choices I make. Camp has helped grow my leadership skills. As a camp counsellor, a lot of the job calls for making decisions, and allocating resources effectively which I’ve gotten better at since camp. Finally, being part of camp has also put me in situations where I’ve had to make tough choices like speaking to campers who have misbehaved. I think it helped me with conflict resolution and also was a learning experience on communication.

Please nominate someone who deserves the employee of the month award and explain why briefly. You can nominate more than one person.

I think Edel deserves the employee of the month award. She’s been a great site leader and she’s been handling the camp very well. Additionally, she handled the trespasser situation with grace as well considering how scary it would be.
