YRES’ LEGO Robotics Collaboration with York Region's Stonebridge Public School

In October 2024, York Region Educational Services collaborated with Stonebridge Public School to deliver a series of engaging LEGO Robotics workshops for students from grades 1 to 2. The workshops’ combination of hands-on building and coding challenges empowered creative thinking and encouraged critical thinking processes.
The class was separated into groups of 4, each with a laptop and a LEGO Education SPIKE kit to explore. Following our teachers’ instructions and guidance, the groups constructed a robotic arm or a dancer, depending on their skill level. Once the builds were completed, the students learned how to connect and control their robot through Scratch—a programming platform suitable for beginners and visual learners. Alongside the offered lessons, students independently explored and edited the code in ways that allowed their ideas to come to life. The room buzzed with curiosity and excitement, as the young learners eagerly gathered around the robot and danced alongside their animated creation!
Supporting the LEGO Robotics program led by Christina at Stonebridge PS was a great pleasure! The most memorable experience I have is the students cheering whenever they stacked another block for the robot arm challenge. Their excitement radiated as they were determined to beat Christina’s high score of 7 blocks!

It was so much fun guiding the students through creating and programming their robots! My favourite moment was seeing the kids work so well together, collaborating and solving problems as a team. Watching their excitement and pride when they saw their final creations come to life was truly unforgettable. It was an experience that allowed me to share my passion for robotics and witness the kids’ growth and enthusiasm.
