Now that camp has officially started, describe one challenge and how you overcame it during the transition to camp duties.

I worked with a younger age group, whose short attention spans often led them to quickly lose interest in planned activities. This necessitated the preparation of numerous backup games in addition to the main one. Initially, it was challenging to determine whether the children were misbehaving or simply bored with the activities. However, as time passed and I became more familiar with each camper’s behavior, I developed the ability to discern whether they were bored or if there were other underlying reasons for their actions. This allowed me to decide if I needed to modify a certain game to increase or decrease the difficulty to pique their interest. 

Describe your top 3 camp moments thus far and why they stand out to you.

  1. Creating a banner with my campers and witnessing their artistic skills flourish was heartwarming. The banner served as a reminder of the wonderful times we shared, whether we were learning math, reading books, or playing at the park.
  2. Teaching children academic subjects and watching them progress from confusion to moments of realization is truly fulfilling. It reminds me that my efforts and patience are making a positive impact.
  3. At the end of the week, many parents inquired about more opportunities like these because their children spoke so highly of their time at camp. Hearing that they enjoyed the thoughtfully planned activities was incredibly rewarding.

Being a month into camp, how do you see the summer camp experience contributing to your personal and professional growth?

A month into camp, I see the summer camp experience contributing significantly to both my personal and professional growth. Personally, working with a younger age group has improved my patience and adaptability. The need to prepare multiple backup activities has enhanced my creativity and problem-solving skills. Professionally, I’ve gained valuable experience in managing group dynamics and understanding individual behaviors, which has sharpened my observational and decision-making abilities. Additionally, teaching academic subjects and witnessing the children’s moments of realization has reinforced my passion for education. This experience has also strengthened my communication skills and ability to engage and motivate young learners, preparing me for future roles in education or youth development.
