During these past 2 months, what were your major duties and how did they relate to your academic studies?
My major projects/duties were high school co-op market research, and GPS camp. Being required to do research in school developed a very helpful skill of being able to research efficiently. The research required for this project was relatively high level compared to academic research, which involves more nitty gritty details and complexities. GPS camp is specialized for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This directly relates to the psychology that I am interested in pursuing (developmental psychology). Having learned about ASD in school, I was able to apply some of the knowledge I had beforehand to most appropriately teach
In May you were asked to envision how YRES would contribute to your growth. How has your time here contributed to your personal and professional development? Were there any unexpected challenges or benefits?
My time at YRES has allowed me to be more brave when talking to people and asking for feedback. In a workplace, communication is key, but it is difficult to feel comfortable sending out messages, especially to a large group of people. Some challenges I faced were getting handed wildly different tasks and having to have them done in a short amount of time. I had to quickly get situated and figure out how to get it done. It was definitely stressful but it developed my skill of adaptability and has given me new experiences that other jobs may not have.
Describe 2-3 projects from your co-op that you're particularly proud of, and how they have helped you grow academically and/or professionally?
Working at GPS was definitely the most relevant project that I worked on. Understanding ASD and building curriculum to suit their learning style definitely relates to psychology the most out of all the projects I worked on. It was also the most fulfilling because I made a genuine connection with the kids and it was a very enjoyable experience. It helped me grow professionally as it was a very new experience that I had to quickly adapt to.
The high school co-op project that I did was also another project I was proud of as it was a starting point of zero when I began. Since it was a solo project, I had to do most of my work alone for the first few weeks, so I definitely developed my time management and self management skills.
