Christina's October reflection

What goals have you set for yourself during your work term at U+/YRES? What steps did you take to make sure these goals are on track?

During my winter term at U+/YRES, one of my main goals has been to successfully manage a team of 6 high school co-op students. I aim to provide them with a valuable co-op experience, assigning tasks and opportunities that align with their role and personal goals. To keep this goal on track, I prioritize consistent communication: regularly checking their work and staying updated on each student’s progress. I ensure to be an accessible and reliable supervisor, encouraging my team to ask questions and reach out whenever they need guidance or support. This approach has helped foster a collaborative environment where they feel comfortable and empowered to learn. Another key goal has been to develop an engaging curriculum for our LEGO Robotics program. To accomplish this, I continuously refine and update my lesson plans – taking into account any feedback from previous workshops. By adapting the curriculum based on past experiences, I can ensure that the program remains enriching and applicable for the target students.

What’s an unexpected skill you developed over the work term so far and how do you envision this bringing a positive change to your career?

An unexpected skill I developed over my work term is leadership. Initially, I expected my responsibilities to be composed of various assigned tasks, supporting the company where possible. However as I progressed in my role, I was given the incredible opportunity to lead my own project and even manage a team! I certainly did not expect to grow so much within the company, but I am beyond happy seeing the positive impact I’ve induced. This experience has given me the confidence to take on bigger responsibilities; tackling intimidating challenges and fostering an initiative mindset. Moving forward, I intend to apply these leadership skills in future roles. I envision this bringing a positive change to my career as it will help me take on projects with confidence and guide teams toward meaningful results.

If you could have a super power that’ll increase the efficiency or quality of your work, what would it be?

If I could have any superpower to boost the quality and efficiency of my work, it would be infinite creativity. As developing engaging and educational LEGO Robotics lessons is one of my main projects, being creative is a critical aspect of my work. This superpower would allow me to craft endless lesson ideas, each one fresh and exciting, capturing the attention and imagination of young students. With infinite creativity, I’d be able to produce unique builds that inspire children to think outside the box and challenge their knowledge of robotics and programming. Not only would infinite creativity provide an abundance of original, unique lessons, but it would also significantly reduce planning time. I could easily modify lessons for different skill levels and create builds that encourage teamwork. Ultimately, this power would allow me to further instill curiosity, adaptability, and problem-solving skills in students.

Please give a shoutout to someone who deserves employee of the month and briefly describe why.

I would like to give a shoutout to Tanya! She works hard to lead, manage, and supervise a large team of high school co-ops and university placement students. I aspire to have her level of time management as she effectively delegates time to teach lessons, monitor employees, develop curriculum, attend events, and so much more!
