Daphne's reflection

Now that summer camp is coming to a close, explain 3 key takeaways from the experience? How will you apply it in the future?

As summer camp draws to a close, three key takeaways stand out. First, effective communication with coworkers using walkie-talkies, texts, and calls proved essential for coordinating activities and ensuring smooth operations. This taught me the importance of maintaining clear and efficient lines of communication in any team setting. Second, establishing a focused workflow for marketing projects was crucial. Creating clear guidelines and timelines ensured everyone could follow along, leading to more organized and successful campaigns. Lastly, I learned the value of adaptability and quick problem-solving in dynamic environments. Moving forward, I will apply these lessons by prioritizing communication, structuring workflows, and remaining flexible to navigate challenges effectively.

Describe one of the biggest challenges you faced, how you overcame it, and what you learned from it.

One of the biggest challenges I faced as a marketing coordinator at the summer camp was capturing high-quality, candid photos of the kids during activities. Many moments were fleeting and occurred in low-light conditions, making it difficult to get the perfect shot. To overcome this, I invested time in learning and mastering photography techniques, including using natural light and adjusting camera settings for various conditions. I also coordinated with camp counselors to identify key moments and ensure I was in the right place at the right time. This experience taught me the importance of preparation and adaptability in achieving effective visual storytelling.

To close off the term on a high note, what were 3 highlights from your time at YRES?

To close off the term on a high note, three highlights from my time at YRES were the campers, the co-workers, and the environment. First, the campers were the heart of the experience, bringing joy and enthusiasm that made each day memorable. Their growth and joy were incredibly rewarding to witness. Second, the co-workers were a supportive and dedicated team, fostering a collaborative atmosphere that made work both enjoyable and effective. Finally, the environment at YRES, with its vibrant and inclusive setting, created a perfect backdrop for creativity and learning. These elements combined to make the term a truly enriching and unforgettable experience.

What is some advice/tip that you would offer to future staff?

One piece of advice for a camp counsellor is to maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude. Your energy and enthusiasm set the tone for the camp environment and significantly impact the campers’ experience. By staying positive, you can inspire and motivate campers, create a supportive atmosphere, and handle challenges with resilience, making the camp experience enjoyable and memorable for everyone.
