Mayeli's reflection

Now that camp has officially started, describe one challenge and how you overcame it during the transition to camp duties.

One challenge I had during the transition to camp duties was being able to learn all campers names in my classroom and how to manage them in a successful way for all. I overcame this challenge by doing name games every day for the first week of camp during icebreaker times. This not only helped me memorize everyone’s names but it also helped the campers memorize each other’s names in a fun way. I also learned very quickly that shouting out chants to get campers attention such as “waterfall” and “hands on top” is a very effective way to bring everyone’s attention back to the teacher and overall topic of conversation.

Describe your top 3 camp moments thus far and why they stand out to you.

My first top camp moment thus far is building contraptions for the egg challenge and dropping the eggs with them afterwards. I could see how hard the campers in my class worked on their contraptions and how much they wanted to win. Seeing the smiles on their faces after realizing they won the challenge was one of the best things to see because they knew their hard work paid off.

My second top camp moment was playing with the parachute with our campers as it was a little nostalgic when my teachers used to do it with me in elementary school, and now I get to show our campers how to play with the parachute.

My third top camp moment was doing the tallest tower challenge with Keva blocks the first week of camp. It was really cool to see the teamwork between all campers and watch them make a tower taller than themselves.

Being a month into camp, how do you see the summer camp experience contributing to your personal and professional growth?

After being a month into camp, I see the summer camp experience contributing to my personal growth because this job has allowed me to develop more flexibility and adaptability when working on a schedule. In terms of my professional growth, this experience has allowed me to realize that not everything will go according to plan and it’s okay because we can find something else to do that keeps campers entertained. I’ve never worked in a camp setting before, so now I have the ability to say I have worked in a camp setting professionally. Overall this gives me more experience working with children for my professional career.

Please nominate someone who deserves the employee of the month award and explain why briefly. You can nominate more than one person.

I think Christina and Dorothy deserve employee of the month because they are always running around the campsite trying to make sure everything runs smoothly.
