Daphne's Reflection

What were your initial expectations coming to work at YRES, and how have they evolved after your first month on the job?
In my first month as a marketing coordinator at YRES, my initial expectations have shifted. Initially, I anticipated making a positive impact through marketing, collaborating with a team, and raising awareness of YRES. However, my experience has been different than expected. Initially, I collaborated with most of the other marketing coordinators, offering assistance with their tasks. My first week was somewhat confusing as I hadn’t been assigned specific tasks yet. Instead, I was instructed to familiarize myself with handover documents and various tools like Slack, Hootsuite, and Benchmark. However, after attending several meetings, I gained a clearer understanding of YRES’s mission and activities. I’ve been able to contribute ideas to improve the organization’s promotion and collaborate with other team members on newsletters and other projects. Overall, while my first month didn’t match my initial expectations, it has provided valuable learning experiences and opportunities for collaboration.
What were your first interactions with the team and how have you been working to build relationships between you and your fellow team members?
As a marketing coordinator, we aren’t really able to interact in person since we are mostly online, however, we do try to come in during the weekends to interact with each other more. The first time we met each other was when we went to Aaniin community centre; it was fun, and a little bit awkward but got closer when we met again at Stonebridge camp which is when we grew closer since we talked about similar interests and stuff. On Sunday May 26th, I was able to interact with project coordinators since we were put into groups by Kevin. My group was very sweet and welcoming. We aren’t going to be in the same location for summer camp but I wish me attending weekend meetings will help build relationships with them! Shout out to Megan, Vanessa, Ina, Vicky, and Jodi! You guys are amazing!
How do you envision your term at YRES contributing to your personal and professional growth?
At YRES, I see myself growing personally by improving teamwork and communication skills while working with other marketing coordinator, and even with project coordinators and teaching assistants. Getting involved in the organization’s mission will also make me more empathetic and socially responsible, broadening my outlook on life.
Professionally, as a marketing coordinator at YRES, I anticipate refining my marketing skills through hands-on experience. I will learn by doing, creating effective campaigns and seeing how well they work. Also, I will get to understand different industries and audiences better, which will make me more flexible and strategic in my future jobs.
Who do you want to show some appreciation to the most and why?
I want to show some appreciation to my fellow marketing coordinators: Harjas and Kaylan! Since I was the last hire, I was very confused on what to do and I would always reach out to them whenever I need help with something or when I have nothing to do, I would always ask them if they need help. We are very patient with each other and would always love to help out each other, which is a good thing!
